Don't Be a Hero

The hot humid weather with intermittent rain showers is causing severe stress to golf course turf. Every disease known to man seems to be active (just kidding, the patch diseases, warm weather diseases), insects, and weed activity is strong (crabgrass, goosegrass, and clover are especially noticeable). The one thing however that seems to be rather uniform on greens is the overall stressed look... thinning, weak, etc. This is no time to be a hero especially with the continued hot weather... raise the height of cut, go to solid rollers, and minimize or eliminate brushing, verticutting, etc. Less is better. Today is the first break in the hot humid weather we have had for the last week. This coming week should be "normal" but the following week will see a return of the intense heat and high humidity. This morning dollar spot was quite evident on susceptible Kentucky bluegrass cultivars found in landscapes. And yes, especially in northern Ohio Lebron leaving has not gone over well...
